Our client, a well-established, family-owned business, is a leading distributor of fuel, lubricants, and energy products in Ontario and Quebec. With a strong focus on reliability and customer service, the company supports a wide range of industries, including agriculture, construction, transportation, and residential heating. As the company continues to expand, we are seeking a highly qualified CFO/Controller to oversee its financial operations and provide strategic leadership.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The CFO/Controller will serve as a key member of the leadership team, responsible for overseeing the company’s financial health and guiding business decisions to drive growth and profitability. Reporting directly to the CEO, the CFO/Controller will manage all aspects of accounting and financial reporting, ensure regulatory compliance, and implement financial strategies to improve operational efficiencies. This role requires a highly analytical and detail-oriented individual with strong leadership skills and a commitment to fostering a collaborative team environment.
Financial Leadership:
- Oversee daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and financial reporting.
- Provide strategic financial guidance to the CEO, senior management, and department heads.
- Lead budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes, ensuring alignment with business goals and objectives.
- Develop and implement financial strategies that support business growth and enhance profitability.
Financial Reporting & Compliance:
- Prepare accurate financial statements, ensuring compliance with GAAP and regulatory standards.
- Lead audits, both internal and external, ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, including tax compliance.
- Maintain and oversee cash flow management, including banking relationships and treasury functions.
Process Improvement & Efficiency:
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy within financial operations.
- Streamline accounting procedures to enhance reporting and decision-making capabilities.
- Implement and maintain financial controls to safeguard company assets.
Risk Management:
- Identify financial risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.
- Manage insurance programs and ensure adequate risk coverage.
- Ensure proper internal controls are in place to prevent fraud and financial misreporting.
Team Management:
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
- Provide training and professional development opportunities to accounting staff.
- Work collaboratively with department heads to support their financial management and reporting needs.
Strategic Financial Planning:
- Collaborate with senior leadership to develop long-term financial strategies that support business objectives.
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to guide investment decisions, business development, and capital expenditures.
- Participate in strategic planning sessions, offering input on the financial impact of business decisions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- CPA designation with a minimum of 10 years of post-qualification experience in Canada.
- Proven experience in a senior financial leadership role, ideally within a family-owned or mid-sized business.
- Bilingual (English and French) with strong communication skills in both languages.
- Advanced knowledge of MS Office, particularly Excel, and familiarity with financial software and ERP systems.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to provide actionable insights to improve business performance.
- Proven ability to streamline financial processes and drive operational efficiency.
- Excellent leadership and team management abilities.
- Experience in the fuel, chemical, or energy sector is an asset.
