ASSISTANT GROWER, LOWER MAINLAND, BC, CANADA – #5083

IN DEMAND Recruitment & Consulting Inc. is currently recruiting for an ASSISTANT GROWER for our Lower Mainland, BC client.

Our client is a nursery wholesaler of premium quality plants based in the Lower Mainland.

We are looking for an Assistant Grower who will be responsible for growing and managing a team of direct reports. The successful incumbent will be responsible for ensuring plants meet established grades and standards. This position reports directly to the Head Grower. Our client is open to relocation for the right candidate.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Develop and implement plant maintenance schedules

Manage all aspects of the growing environment – heating, shading, venting, etc.

Manage crops to achieve target grades and projected finish dates

Manage preventative spray programs

Supervision, mentorship and training of staff

Complete daily/weekly reports

Assist with the development of fertilization schedules

Monitor and assist with transplant protocols, as well as report back any plant-loss or plant-mix problems

Regularly review new transplant locations

Assist in cutting coordination of liners for standard propagation

Develop and update winterization schedules

Direct Environmental Services on issues involving weeds, insects, and diseases

Advise management when repairs & modifications to the growing environment are necessary

Work with parallel departments to ensure quality through the ship date

Work with the other staff to research the growing parameters for soils, fertilization, top-dresses, and application requests to improve crop yield

QUALIFICATIONS:

A degree or formal education in horticulture combined with growing experience in ornamental horticulture of container plants is required

Minimum 3 years of plant growing experience

Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time

A proven ability and interest in plant growing

Must be able to lead and motivate people to meet departmental and individual goals

Must have a working knowledge of computer programs

Able to work extra hours as required to meet department objectives

High-level of proficiency in the English language, both written and spoken

Able to lift up to 50 lbs
