PROCESS ENGINEER

Advanced Manufacturing | Lithium Battery Materials
Johnson City, Tennessee and/or Danville, Virginia |

Full-Time | Permanent

THE OPPORTUNITY

IN DEMAND Recruitment & Consulting Inc. is currently assisting our client in their search for an experienced Process Engineer to support advanced manufacturing operations. This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on engineer who enjoys being close to manufacturing operations, solving complex production challenges, analyzing process performance, and implementing improvements that have a measurable impact on safety, quality, yield, throughput, reliability and cost.

Operating within a lithium battery separator manufacturing environment, the Process Engineer will take technical ownership of assigned manufacturing processes and work closely with Operations, Quality, Maintenance, R&D, EHS and Supply Chain to improve day-to-day manufacturing performance.

The successful candidate will bring strong manufacturing fundamentals, data-driven problem-solving capabilities, and the ability to translate engineering analysis into sustainable improvements on the plant floor.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

As the Process Engineer, you will take ownership of assigned manufacturing processes while supporting continuous improvement, troubleshooting, new product introduction and manufacturing scale-up.

You will:

  • Own and support manufacturing processes involving mixing, coating, slitting, material handling and related separator production operations.
  • Monitor and analyze process performance to improve safety, product quality, yield, throughput, reliability, cost and overall process stability.
  • Troubleshoot production and process issues, lead structured root-cause investigations, and implement sustainable corrective actions.
  • Establish and maintain process windows, operating parameters, setup standards and engineering procedures.
  • Support production startups, process validation and equipment qualification readiness.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on scrap reduction, yield improvement, cycle-time reduction, process capability and equipment reliability.
  • Apply engineering and statistical methodologies including Root Cause Analysis, SPC, PFMEA, DOE and Six Sigma.
  • Identify opportunities to improve manufacturing performance through modifications to processes, equipment, controls and material-handling systems.
  • Analyze process capability, manufacturing trends, defects and equipment data to identify recurring losses and prioritize improvement opportunities.
  • Partner with R&D, Quality and Operations on new product introductions, process development and manufacturing scale-up.
  • Plan and execute pilot and production trials, including trial objectives, data requirements, acceptance criteria and technical conclusions.
  • Evaluate new materials, technologies, equipment and manufacturing methods.
  • Translate development and trial results into repeatable, documented production processes and standards.
  • Use manufacturing data and process trends to support sound technical and operational decision-making.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering.
  • Approximately 3–7 years of Process Engineering experience within a relevant manufacturing environment.
  • Experience within lithium battery manufacturing, roll-to-roll manufacturing, web handling, coating/converting, extrusion, plastics, chemical processing or advanced manufacturing is strongly preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with manufacturing troubleshooting, process optimization, production trials and continuous improvement.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and structured engineering problem-solving.
  • Working knowledge of SPC, DOE, PFMEA, Root Cause Analysis, process capability and Lean/Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Ability to interpret manufacturing data, equipment parameters, process trends and quality results to make sound technical decisions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and manufacturing data-analysis or historian tools.
  • Ability to manage multiple technical projects and priorities within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across technical and operational teams.
  • Strong attention to detail, technical ownership and commitment to safety and operational excellence.
  • Ability to travel between plant locations as required.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate is a hands-on Process Engineer who wants to own the process rather than simply analyze it.

You are comfortable spending time on the manufacturing floor, working directly with Operations and Maintenance to understand problems, analyzing the underlying data, determining root cause, and implementing solutions that deliver measurable improvements.

Experience with coating, converting, web handling, extrusion, plastics, chemical processing or other continuous/advanced manufacturing processes would translate particularly well to this opportunity.

You combine strong technical fundamentals with practical manufacturing judgment and are comfortable taking a process from development and trial through validation, scale-up, standardization and sustained production performance.

WHY CONSIDER THIS OPPORTUNITY?

This is an opportunity to join an advanced manufacturing operation supporting the rapidly evolving lithium battery and energy technology sector.

You’ll have the opportunity to make a direct impact on manufacturing performance while gaining exposure to process development, new technologies, production scale-up, continuous improvement and advanced manufacturing systems.

For an engineer who enjoys solving problems, working collaboratively with plant teams, and seeing the measurable results of their work on the manufacturing floor, this offers an excellent combination of technical challenge, ownership and long-term career development.
