The position is accountable for the development, planning and management of the maintenance and engineering activities required to ensure safe and optimal operational efficiency of terminal equipment and processes. Manages the ongoing modification of and improvement to the facility to ensure ongoing competitiveness and profitability.


Plans, develops, organizes and supervises repair and maintenance programs to ensure equipment installation and Terminal is maintained in good operating condition.

Directs and supervises the Maintenance Supervisors in completing their work assignments.

Analyzes new technologies in grain processing, recommends enhancements as appropriate, and plans and manages project teams in the implementation of approved new/revised systems and processes.

Plans, develops, organizes, and monitors systems such as equipment records, scheduling, reporting and a preventative maintenance system to ensure equipment is properly serviced and maintained with the most efficient utilization of manpower and materials.

Administers and monitors divisional and corporate policies.

Develops major and minor repair and maintenance budgets for the Terminal; monitors and explains deviations from budget.

Develops capital budgets and directs capital related projects.

Manages engineering projects related to improvement and protection of assets.

Ensures requirements and licensing fees are met relating to appropriate government agencies.

Manages and monitors personnel issues relating to all maintenance department staff.

Communicates management information and plans through written correspondence, meetings and presentations.

Participates in the development and conduct of Safety Training and Staff Development Programs for repair and maintenance personnel.

Investigates new methods and procedures for repair and maintenance of terminal equipment and selects and implements improvements that are economical and feasible to the physical plant.

Drives continuous improvement to sustain and enhance productivity.

Hires, promotes, and discharges staff within company policy and provides for effective staff development.

Performs other duties as required.


Minimum ten (10) years’ experience in the following fields as a tradesman:


Terminal Elevator

Supervisory/Maintenance Management

PE or Certified Engineering Technology

Equivalent combinations of education and experience that result in the required level of knowledge skill and competence will be considered.

Mechanical and analytical ability.

Poven planning, problem solving, organizing, project management and supervisory ability.

Demonstrated oral, written and listening communication skills.

Expertise in delegating and controlling.

Proven ability to work effectively under stress as related to extreme flexibility and variation required of daily planning within a terminal elevator.

Computer competent.

Work closely with PGA technology experts to learn the PGA plant process and equipment. Become a technology expert on PGA processes.

Provide chemical engineering input into design changes including process safety and process control.

Develop and update Operating Procedures and training materials, and lead training.

Lead solving of complex problems related to process, mechanical, control systems, equipment integrity and other disciplines.

Lead development of production plans including operation scheduling and operation conditions.

Monitor product and process performance; set-up and/or participate in executing systems to track performance and prioritize improvement opportunities.

Lead and participate in incident investigations and cause analysis (Quality, Reliability, Production, Safety and Environmental) and implement action items to prevent recurrence.

Participate in PHAs, (Process Hazard Analysis), MOCs (Management of Change) and PSSRs (pre-start-up safety reviews).

Develop and implement process “best practices”, standards/policies, productivity improvements and work processes for operations that address safety, quality, efficiency and reliability.

Provide process engineering support for projects including develop basic data, conduct PHA or MOC review, and design oversight.

Work with operators and mechanics to develop Job Hazard Analyses and implement appropriate mitigation for hazards identified.

Communication with parent company technical staff (in Japan) on technical issues (reporting, proposing, discussing etc.)


BS Chemical Engineering

5+ years of experience in chemical engineering with a detailed knowledge of chemical process operations, OSHA and PSM.

Demonstrated experience working with teams.

Demonstrated experience in getting results, meeting commitments & problem-solving skills.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Required:

Licensed Professional Chemical Engineer preferred

Working Relationships:

Peers- Our client’s team in Japan/US Process/Production Engineers, Contract Project Engineers, Facility Reliability Engineer, Quality Manager, Operations Team Leaders

Indirect Subordinates- Operators and Contract Reliability Staff.


Detailed knowledge of established processes, methods, and techniques related to chemical plant operation

Practical knowledge of scientific principles.

Normal: M-F, 8am – 4:30pm, ½ hour unpaid lunch

Occasional: Nights and weekends to participate in operation activities. May be requested to join a shift rotation (to share in providing 7 day per week, 24hr coverage) for an operating campaign.

Salt Lake City, in addition to being home to the Winter Olympics in 2002, has nearby mountains that are widely known to be the home of “The Greatest Snow on Earth” and several world class ski resorts. US News ranked Salt Lake City 15th out of 125 metro areas in the US in terms of best places to live. This person will be groomed to be the next Plant Manager.


Reporting to the Plant Manager, will be the number two person on site for this 3 shift operation.

Manage supervisors and hourly workforce to consistently and reliably meet the operating plan. Responsible for performance management, hiring, training and succession planning

Assist in development of site budget.

Review production plans to ensure adequate resources are in place to meet plan objectives.

Drive safety and environmental compliance.

Use Root Cause Analysis and Failure Mode and Equipment Analysis tools to prevent recurring failures.

Participate on the Site Safety Committee

Work together with Supply Chain, Engineering and Maintenance to drive continuous improvement, reduce costs and improve efficiency.

Work with Process Technology to coordinate product scale ups and technology transfer.


BS Degree in Engineering, Chemical or Mechanical

Minimum of 8-10 years industry experience including 3-5 years in an Operations Management role.

Experience in the food ingredient industry a plus.

Track record of driving Continuous Improvement in a manufacturing environment.

Experienced HAZOP Leader.

Knowledge of GMP, OSHA and EPA regulations

Should be viewed as promotable to a plant management role.
