The Opportunity
A rapidly growing process technology company is seeking a Senior Electrical & Instrumentation Engineer to support the design and construction of new industrial facilities across the U.S. This is a capital-project-focused role with approximately 80% of the position centered on electrical engineering and design, complemented by instrumentation and controls interface responsibilities.
We are looking for an engineer who has spent meaningful time in a chemical plant or similar process manufacturing environment and understands how electrical designs translate from engineering documents into safe, reliable, operable facilities.
The Senior Electrical & Instrumentation Engineer will provide electrical engineering leadership for capital projects, facility expansions, and process upgrades.
Reporting to the Electrical Engineering Manager, this individual will serve as the company’s electrical technical representative when working with EPC firms, consultants, utilities, equipment suppliers, contractors, and internal project teams.
The position is primarily focused on electrical engineering and design, with instrumentation and controls responsibilities centered on electrical interfaces, design coordination, and overall system integration.
Projects will span concept development, engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, startup, and closeout.
What You’ll Do:
Lead Electrical Engineering for Capital Projects
- Serve as electrical discipline lead and owner’s technical representative for assigned capital projects.
- Establish electrical and instrumentation design criteria, scopes of work, technical requirements, deliverables, and acceptance criteria.
- Direct and review engineering performed by EPC firms, consultants, vendors, system integrators, and construction contractors.
- Develop and review calculations, specifications, data sheets, RFQs, technical bid evaluations, drawings, and construction packages.
- Evaluate designs for technical quality, completeness, constructability, reliability, and compliance.
Design & Integrate Industrial Electrical Systems
Lead and review the design and integration of:
- Medium- and low-voltage power distribution
- Substations and transformers
- Switchgear and switchboards
- MCCs, motors, and VFDs
- Protective relays and circuit breakers
- UPS, battery, DC, emergency, and standby power systems
- Grounding and lightning protection
- Heat tracing
- Lighting and receptacle systems
Review electrical-system studies including:
- Load flow
- Motor starting
- Short circuit
- Protective-device coordination
- Arc flash
- Grounding
- Cable sizing
Evaluate existing electrical-system capacity and identify upgrades required to support new process loads.
Coordinate Instrumentation & Controls Interfaces
While the position is primarily electrical, you’ll provide practical instrumentation and controls engineering support, including:
- Review P&IDs, instrument indexes, I/O lists, instrument data sheets, loop diagrams, control narratives, and cause-and-effect matrices.
- Support selection and specification of pressure, temperature, flow, level, analytical, and final control elements.
- Coordinate instrumentation power, grounding, shielding, signal segregation, cable routing, junction boxes, remote I/O, and hazardous-area requirements.
- Review PLC, HMI, control-panel, industrial-network, and packaged-equipment interfaces for technical completeness.
- Coordinate with controls engineers and system integrators on interlocks, alarms, permissives, shutdowns, and equipment sequences.
- Identify integration gaps between process requirements and electrical, instrumentation, and controls designs.
Coordinate Across Engineering Disciplines

Ensure electrical and instrumentation requirements are properly integrated into the overall facility design.
Oversee EPC & Vendor Engineering
- Review EPC schedules, document registers, technical deviations, field changes, and change-order proposals.
- Evaluate EPC and vendor engineering for completeness, quality, integration, and constructability.
- Identify technical, procurement, cost, and schedule risks and recommend corrective actions.
- Support equipment and contractor technical evaluations.
- Help ensure external engineering partners meet project requirements and technical expectations.
Support Construction, Commissioning & Startup
- Support vendor inspections and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT).
- Participate in construction walkdowns and field technical reviews.
- Support loop checks, Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), energization, commissioning, and startup.
- Review RFIs, test reports, relay results, calibration records, loop folders, and commissioning documentation.
- Participate in MOC, PHA, HAZOP, constructability, PSSR, and commissioning-readiness reviews.
- Resolve technical issues that emerge as designs move from engineering into the field.
Provide Technical Leadership
- Apply sound engineering judgment to balance safety, reliability, operability, cost, and schedule.
- Mentor engineers and designers.
- Help improve electrical engineering standards, specifications, and design practices.
- Lead through influence across multidisciplinary project teams and external engineering partners.
What We’re Looking For:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- 7+ years of electrical and instrumentation engineering experience.
- Meaningful experience working in a chemical plant or closely related process industry environment.
- Strong industrial electrical engineering and design experience.
- Experience delivering capital projects through engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and startup.
- Experience serving as an electrical discipline lead, project technical lead, or owner’s engineer.
- Experience overseeing EPC firms, engineering consultants, equipment suppliers, system integrators, and construction contractors.
- Strong knowledge of industrial power distribution through 480 VAC and working knowledge of medium-voltage systems.
- Experience with substations, transformers, switchgear, MCCs, motors, VFDs, protective relays, grounding, and industrial electrical infrastructure.
- Experience reviewing load-flow, motor-starting, short-circuit, coordination, arc-flash, grounding, and cable-sizing studies.
- Working knowledge of process instrumentation, control valves, analyzers, PLC systems, remote I/O, and industrial control networks.
- Ability to review P&IDs, instrument data sheets, I/O lists, loop diagrams, control narratives, cause-and-effect matrices, single-line diagrams, and vendor drawings.
- Understanding of instrumentation power, grounding, shielding, signal segregation, intrinsic safety, and hazardous-area installation requirements.
- Experience supporting electrical and instrumentation construction, testing, energization, commissioning, and startup.
- Knowledge of applicable NEC, NFPA, IEEE, ANSI, ISA, UL, OSHA, and hazardous-area requirements.
- Strong technical leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
- Ability and willingness to work 100% on-site in Atlanta, Georgia.
- Ability to travel approximately 10–20%, based on project requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience managing multiple EPC or engineering contractors.
- Experience with medium-voltage systems rated 4.16 kV or higher.
- Experience with ETAP, EasyPower, SKM, AutoCAD Electrical, or similar tools.
- Familiarity with Rockwell ControlLogix, Siemens, Codesys, or similar control platforms.
- Familiarity with Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/RTU, Profibus, Profinet, HART, and other industrial communication protocols.
- Experience specifying pressure, temperature, flow, level, analytical, and control-valve applications.
- Experience reviewing safety instrumented functions, shutdown logic, alarm rationalization, and packaged-equipment controls.
- Experience with FAT, SAT, relay testing, instrument calibration, loop checks, MOC, PHA, HAZOP, and PSSR.
- Experience in chemical processing, petrochemical, refining, plastics, renewable fuels, advanced manufacturing, or a closely related process industry.
